Abstract: Seeking world-class university (WCU) status has become a global phenomenon. In spite of many social, cultural, political and economic differences, governments and top universities in both developed and developing countries have joined the battle for academic excellence, as indicated by a range of development strategies and excellence initiatives. In this presentation, the concept of WCU will be introduced, the performance of top universities in One-Belt-One-Road (OBOR) countries and their trends in global rankings will be explored, excellence initiatives in OBOR countries and their impact will be discussed, and excellence initiatives in Mainland China will be presented.

Academic Ranking of World Universities: History and Future

Abstract:In the age of higher education globalization, university rankings have been attracting attentions from all over the world. Since the publication of the first multi-indicator global university ranking, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), there have appeared more than a dozen of global university rankings in the past 14 years. In this presentation, the history of ARWU and global university rankings will be introduced, the methodologies and limitations of ARWU will be discussed, the latest development on field and subject ranking  including the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects will be presented, and the ongoing efforts to develop new ranking indicators will be explored.
