Assistant Professor more
Juuso Nieminen is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong and an Honorary Fellow at Deakin University, Australia. Juuso’s research concerns the social, cultural and political aspects of assessment and feedback in higher education. Juuso is interested in applying socio-cultural and -political theories to understand the role of assessment in modern higher education. His research is particularly focused on the students’ point of view in the questions of assessment: what is students’ role in assessment, and how does assessment regulate students’ agency as future professionals and citizens? Recently, Juuso has studied the role of assessment in student formation, examining how numerical grades provide students the means to understand themselves in quantified ways, in comparison to other students, to themselves, and to ‘the norm’. Juuso’s work makes use of educational theory to inform better practice through innovation. He has published two co-authored books on developing assessment practices in higher education.
